Afterlife music’s Sunrise is another example of how collaboration produces magic. As a music producer, collaborating with other musicians is one of the most rewarding parts of the creative process. I have already covered one of my favourite collaborations, Breather 2000 where I had the pleasure of working with Eric and Tom Lund. We collaborated again sometime later, on a track called Sunrise.
Afterlife Music Sunrise. How it developed.
Our collaborations have always involved reinterpretation. Eric had suggested that Tom change the chords, and when he did, he used what I call “all the other chords.” There’s always a chord that’s relative to the one in the track, and Tom used all of the other ones in Sunrise. When I heard the result, I knew it was beautiful, but Tom wanted to experiment even more. I convinced him to stick with what we had, and it turned out to be the right choice. Tom is an absolute genius when it comes to instinctively finding just the right sound.
Sunrise was a rare track, released some time earlier as a deep house track, featuring vocals by Rachel Lloyd. She’s a fantastic vocalist and has worked with me in the past. Typically, she writes stream-of-consciousness lyrics on the spot.
When I sent the track to Eric and Tom to get their feedback, they loved it so much that they asked for the vocals to start working on it from scratch. What I love about this story, is that a folk singer came in and worked her magic, resulting in something very different.
